Something catches your sight and you take a picture. What do you look at? What do you see in it?

Learn how to see the way your camera does and learn how to help your camera capture what is in your eyes.
Analog photography means taking the time for this.

In this personlized workshop we will look into the basics of analog photography and put theory to practice by photographing indoors and/or outdoors.

This workshop is a great fit for you if:

  • analog photography is totally new for you and you want to embark on the journey with a solid base that includes theory along with practice (if you prefer to dive into practice with minimum theory, check out Analog Impressions).  
  • you already have a little knowledge or experience and would like to solidify or deepen your understanding and your experience with the different aspects of photographing. In this case topics from different parts can be combined. 

WORKSHOP CONTENT

This workshop in three parts is conceived to give you a rounded and whole experience.
You can also book any one of the parts separately.

If you already have some previous knowledge, the contents of the parts can be adjusted accordingly. Let me also know if there is any particular topic you’d like to learn that is not listed.

PART 1 – THE CAMERA & EXPOSURE

in the first workshop part you will:

  • get a brief overview of different types of analog camera & lens
  • understand the analog camera and its functions
  • learn about exposure and how to make a correct exposure
  • become familiar with the black & white silver gelatin film
  • find out about different film types and their intended uses
  • begin to pay attention to what you see when you look

PART 2 – DEPTH OF FIELD,  LIGHT  &  SHADOW

In the second workshop part you will:

  • practice your observation skills by mindfully noticing what you see
  • begin to think about your surroundings in terms of black & white (…and gray)
  • learn about the aspects that make your photographs what you want them to be, such as:
  • depth of field
  • light & shadow
  • high contrast situations

PART 3 – COMPOSITION & IMAGE ANALYSIS

In the third workshop part you will:

  • learn to understand aspects of composition and how they influence your image
  • practice photographing motifs of your interest with attention to aspects of composition
  • think about your surroundings in black & white (…and gray) as part of your image composition
  • deepen your observation skills and your practice of mindfully noticing what you see
  • discuss and analyze your previously made photographs in-depth

Films & Camera

A B&W FILM per each part will be provided by me.
If you already have a favorite film, you can of course bring it with you.

In between some sessions you would need to have your films developed and either printed or scanned, so that we can discuss them. Here you can find recommended places for that in Berlin or by mail. 

CAMERA: If you have your own analog camera, bring it with you.
If you don’t, you can use one that I provide you during the workshop for a deposit of 150 €.
